Information & Resources

Community resources specific to a person with a brain injury are growing and developing. Most of the mentioned resources are for people with disabilities that include brain injury. Designated services for individuals with a brain injury are specified.

Community Options:

Community is defined as an area that a person lives; people living in a common location, i.e. people receiving support services from a multitude of community agencies.

– Post-acute, Inpatient and Outpatient Rehabilitation - Expand / Collapse

Rehabilitation programs within specialized facilities.

Vocational Rehabilitation - Expand / Collapse

A specialist in vocational issues who helps the person with a disability develop the skills and aptitudes necessary for return to productive activity and the community.

Community Resources- Recreational - Expand / Collapse

Program that addresses leisure / recreation, maximizing basic functional skills and daily living. Long term placement during the day, whereby person returns to residence in the evening.

One may return to school / college or pursue educational opportunities.

Independent Living Centers - Expand / Collapse

Community-based independent living services for persons with disabilities. People with disabilities work and volunteer at the centers. Services include peer support, information and resources, advocacy, and skills training.

Support Groups - Expand / Collapse

A group established for families and / or persons with disabilities to discuss problems they may be having in coping with their life situation and to seek solutions to these problems.

Respite - Expand / Collapse

A means for taking over the care of a person temporarily (a few hours up to a few days) to provide a period of relief for the primary caregiver.

Community-based programs offered by the county.

– Residential Facilities - Expand / Collapse

A place where one resides, and may include community-based residential facilities, group homes, adult family homes, supported / supervised living.

Community Resources- Day Programs - Expand / Collapse

An intensive outpatient program, designed to maximize functional skills, address psychological and behavioral adjustment, and vocational rehab. Short term based on functional gains; focus on preparation for community and vocational re-entry.
